TUTORIAL PROGRAM:
Community High School
has long recognized that individualized instruction can be far reaching, strengthening a student's skill development, improving self-concept and increasing motivation. Therefore, in addition to small group instruction and individualized attention offered within classes, we have also expanded the remedial classes available for specific skill development.

Tutorial sessions are offered in vocabulary development, reading comprehension, written expression, mathematics, and study skills. Individualized work plans are designed to provide students with practice in the development and implementation of learning strategies and effective independent work habits. Study skills/homework classes are available daily to help students with homework assignments and the development of efficient study routines.

To meet the specific needs of the dyslexic student, multiple teaching approaches are employed, including the ORTON GILLINGHAM METHOD of language training.

Speech and Language Therapy is also offered as prescribed using a communication-based model, delivered within individual and small group sessions, as well as in selected language arts classes. Instruction is focused on the development of adolescent communication skills for use in both the academic and social arenas.
ELECTIVES PROGRAM:
Community High School Elective Programs
offers instruction in foreign language, sociology and psychology, as well as music, computer literacy, drama, fine arts, media, journalism, cooking, photography, video production, computer graphics, graphic arts, word processing, and business.

Drama classes of varying levels teach the basic techniques of acting, working as an ensemble, and technical support skills. A studio/theater workshop is complete with modular furniture and theater props as well as a small "stage area" to allow students to practice scenes. A drama and performing arts ensemble produces two or three full stage productions each year in the auditorium. While working on the stage productions, students learn the more advanced skills of acting and production.

A Student Council meets regularly and sponsors an annual toy drive, talent show, school yearbook, Senior Class Trip and Spring Prom. Student committees work throughout the year on peer assistance programs, special assemblies and extra-curricular projects.

HEALTH, PHYSICAL EDUCATION, AND ATHLETICS PROGRAM:
Community High School provides many opportunities for its students to excel athletically by offering a wide variety of recreational and interscholastic activities.

Intramural sports offerings include flag football, indoor soccer, volleyball, and basketball. Students are also encouraged to compete in the varsity sports program. As a member of the Tri-County Athletic League, Community High School competes against high schools of similar size in soccer, tennis, basketball, volleyball, softball, baseball, and golf. In addition, dance team and cheerleader squads actively promote school spirit.

Community High School has excellent facilities for these activities including a newly renovated full size gymnasium, weight training area, and a state of the art “Field of Dreams”. The “Field of Dreams,” which is shared by both the lower school and high school, includes soccer and softball fields, a running track, picnic facilities, fitness stations, and an outdoor classroom and sitting areas, creating an overall park-like atmosphere.

Community High School offers students an extensive Health Education program, which includes a family life curriculum that is aligned with New Jersey’s Core Curriculum Content Standards. A variety of special programs and individual speakers dealing with health and safety issues are also provided each year.

Driver’s Education is offered to Community High School students. This program prepares students for the state’s written exam.

COLLEGE PREPARATION AND GUIDANCE:
Our Guidance Department is responsible for assisting the graduating student in finding the right post-secondary program to further his or her education and maturation. Guidance staff and senior advisors maintain ongoing communication with students and parents to ensure that the selection and application process goes smoothly. Throughout the year seniors fill out applications, write essays and gather teacher recommendations, with the supervision and assistance of the Guidance Staff.

The Guidance Department hosts sessions where colleges, universities and vocational schools offering learning disabilities support programs can interact directly with the students and parents. Our staff helps to investigate and explain the different resources and services available. It is particularly rewarding when a Community High School alumnus returns as one of the representatives for the post-secondary school.

Recent Community High School graduates have attended Bradford College, Carnegie Mellon University, Clark University, Curry College, Emerson College, Fairleigh Dickinson University, Landmark College, Monmouth College, Northeastern University, Ramapo College, St. Thomas Aquinas College, Syracuse University, Towson State University, Vassar College, University of Massachusetts and University of Wisconsin. Those students with particular interest such as art or culinary studies have an opportunity to follow fellow CHS graduates to The Culinary Institute of America, Johnson and Wales, Parsons School of Design, and the Pratt Institute.

TRANSITIONAL PLANNING:
CAREER EXPLORATION: Community High School's career planning program is both exploratory and preparatory. Career readiness training is interconnected throughout the curriculum. The career coordinator is assisted by cross-content educators who provide information and instruction geared to each student's transitional plan with the shared goal of moving the student from high school to independent living. Initially, a career portfolio is set up and then updated annually. Vital information is collected through career surveys, interest testing, job sampling, guest lectures, job tours and vocational research. Customized job shadowing and work-based placements are developed on an individual basis.

The heart of the career exploration program lies within the English Department. Skills, such as completing a resume, job or college applications, or practicing interviewing techniques are emphasized in the classroom. Linking school experiences to adult life is the key to our successful transition program.

COMMUNITY SERVICE: Our Community Service Program is quite unique. It includes traditional experience that center around giving back to the community such as working at a day care center, tutoring younger students in the Community Lower School or working at a geriatric nursing facility. Additionally, the Community Service Program offers experiences more vocationally oriented. Our students have worked as electrician apprentices, as trainees helping care for animals in pet shops, in all aspects of the automotive field and in other areas in which they have had an interest before deciding on a career. One student chose to work in a police department before choosing criminal justice as a major in college. The Community Service Program can be a way of giving back to the community, as well as providing a student's very first job experience or an opportunity to explore a career or profession first hand before making a decision.
