ABOUT COMMUNITY HIGH SCHOOL:

The High School Division of The Community School, established in 1976, provides students in grades 9-12 with skilled remedial help and a challenging academic curriculum. It offers a complete high school experience for the bright adolescent with learning disabilities, providing basic preparation for studies at the college level or within a post-secondary program. A full academic curriculum is taught within the framework of an educational plan developed to meet each student's needs and learning style.

Through small group instruction and innovative teaching, the Community High School exposes students to the wide range of information and activities available in the educational mainstream.

The Community High School is a truly unique program, constantly adjusting to changing educational demands and to the needs of our population. Our electronic learning component assures that our students have the opportunity to fully engage in high-tech, hands-on learning. Our electronic learning program features computers in every classroom including English writing labs, computer labs, science labs, a Learning Resource Center with CD-ROM's, library with internet access, optical scanners (which read text aloud), and a voice dictation system (which prints spoken words into text).

Community High School enrolls nearly 170 students, privately and publicly funded, from 73 sending public school districts throughout five New Jersey counties, as well as New York City, Rockland, and Westchester Counties in New York State. They are young people of diverse cultural, ethnic and socio-economic backgrounds. Each student experiences a gap between his or her potential and performance, exhibiting varied deficits, including hyperactivity, speech and language impairment, dyslexia, and other social and academic delays. Our goal at Community High School is to provide innovative instruction built on each child's strengths in order to bridge the gaps created by these deficits.

The school extends beyond academics, offering a complete interscholastic athletics program, full-scale drama and music productions, photography, publishing courses, and a community service program that furthers social awareness and community participation. The students' learning experience emphasizes knowledge and skills but also develops the independence, initiative and social and academic confidence that a young person needs to be successful in college.

A large ball field/play field adjacent to the Community School and directly across from Community High School provides our physical education programs, track and field, day events, interscholastic athletics, assemblies, and special school programs.
